This travel blog is long overdue, Today I'm talking about all the amazing things Venice has to offer. I was there last July which meant amazing weather to explore this romantic city.
There are two 'parts' to this city.... The mainland and the actual island where all the main tourist areas are. I highly recommend staying on the island as taxi boats and transport is quiet expensive. We stayed in a rustic hotel on the island and it was perfect.
St Mark's Square
St Mark's Square is where all the action happens. This huge area in the middle of the island has museums, restaurants, shops and the amazing basilica. It was 36 degrees when we were there, the basilica is free entry but the queues are crazy so we didn't think it was worth being burnt alive queuing for hours.
Instead we went to the museum in Mark's Sq. entry for this was €19 however this included entry to Doges Palace which I will get to soon. This was a great way to beat the heat and we spent an hour strolling through the royal quarters seeing the rooms and artifacts. It was very interesting.
Doges Palace was one of my favourite places. You can explore the palace in your own time, taking in all the huge rooms with gold ceilings. It was truly spectacular. You can spend anywhere from 2-3 hours in this palace and one of the really cool experiences is walking through the Bridge of Sighs. You get to experience the last views the prisoners would see before being brought to their cells and you can see all the tourists having no idea you are inside the bridge. It is definitely a must do in my opinion.
Grab A Gondola!
Can you really say you've been to Venice if you didn't get a gondola ride? First off, it's not as romantic as you think as there are literally 100s of them at every corner of each canal. However, it is worth going on one as you see the city from a different viewpoint.
It cost €120 for a 1 hour ride. There were 6 of us so it only cost €20pp. It's nice to sit back and relax as you weave through the narrow canals avoiding other gondolas on the way. An enjoyable experience.
Things to do
In summary, here is all Venice has to offer.
Venice in my opinion is a once in a lifetime place. I loved it but once you have all the main attractions and tourist sights you have seen all Venice has. I hope you enjoyed reading and found it helpful.
Until next time,
