As some of you may be aware I have just come back from the holiday of a lifetime Interrailing through Europe for 3 weeks. I've decided rather then have one huge blog post I would break it up into sections from how much it cost, what route we chose and what to pack and unpack. I'm starting today with what exactly interrail entails.
What is Interrailing?
For those of you that don't know what Interrailing is here's a brief description. Interrail is basically travelling through Europe by train. Depending on what pass you choose you can see up to 30 countries and experience some incredible journeys.
What pass is best for me?
Depending on what kind of journey you wish to entail will determine what pass you need to get. Interrail.eu offers 7 different Global passes which allow you to travel from country to country throughout Europe. For my trip I got the 7 days within 1 month pass which allowed 7 days to travel from each destination. We did 8 cities so it was perfect for us!
What is a travel day?
A travel day is any day in which you get on a train/bus/ferry to a destination. For example our journey from Munich to Venice was counted as one travel day as we took a 6 hour train journey to get from A to B..
You can also travel on night trains after 8pm and count them as one travel day even though you won't arrive until the day after you begin your journey.
The first thing you need to do when planning a trip is decide where you want to go. For my trip we wanted to do 8 cities which determined the type of pass we required. Once you have decided, book your flights to and from you start and finish points. We started in Copenhagen and ended our trip in Rome.
While some people don't plan where they go inbetween and just decide on the day I personally wanted to know our route. I also wanted to book our accommodation before we went. I highly recommend doing this as we often arrived into a new place late in the evening and all we wanted was to shower and sleep!
We decided to go with a travel agent to do all this work and I couldn't recommend Lorraine Wynne Travel Counsellor enough! She literally organised everything for us at huge value for money and we did not once have to worry about anything while on our trip.
Our Route Through Europe...
After a little deliberation this is the route we decided to take.
I'm going to end this one here. The next blog post will be the cost and essentials to pack so stay tuned for that in the coming weeks.
I hope this helped anyone who is interested in interrailing and does not know where to begin.
Until next time,
